When it was first published, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings was described by W.H. Auden as ‘a masterpiece of its genre'; (1) forty years later it was voted ‘the book of the century'.' (2) A first edition copy of the three-volume set is a desideratum for all collectors of modern English literature; a dedicated copy (with the inscription in Elvish!) is a rare find indeed. (3)
